LONDON, June 4 (Reuters) – Labour mayor Andy Burnham signalled on Thursday he would run in any leadership race against \u200bPrime Minister Keir Starmer, saying that if he won a local \u200celection later this month he would seek to join any challenge against the British leader.<\/div>\n
Speaking in a BBC debate with other contenders in an \u200belection to a parliamentary seat in northern England, Greater \u200bManchester mayor Burnham said the governing Labour Party, which \u2060is trailing in opinion polls, needed a fundamental change.<\/div>\n
Starmer, whose \u200bpopularity ratings are some of the lowest for a British leader, \u200bhas vowed to fight to keep his job, but potential rivals are circling him, including Burnham and former health minister Wes Streeting, who resigned last month in \u200bprotest at the prime minister’s record.<\/div>\n
Asked about his ambitions, Burnham, who \u200blost two earlier attempts to become Labour leader, said he did not want \u200cto \u2060get “ahead of himself”, acknowledging he must first win the election in Makerfield on June 18 to be able to challenge Starmer.<\/div>\n
“I can’t do anything unless I’m lucky enough to get the support \u200bof people here (in \u200bMakerfield). But if \u2060I get your support, I would seek to represent you at the highest possible level,” he \u200bsaid in the debate.<\/div>\n
He said he thought Streeting \u200bseemed \u2060to have already “launched a leadership contest”, something the former health minister has not yet done formally.<\/div>\n
“So if that is running, I would \u2060seek to \u200bjoin it. But I’d have to \u200bpersuade members of the parliamentary Labour Party to do the same. So that’s the \u200bonly question,” Burnham said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
