June 5 (Reuters) – Marvell Technology (MRVL.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> is set to join the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> later this month, S&P \u200bDow Jones Indices said on Friday, after the chipmaker cleared a \u200ckey profitability hurdle riding an AI-fueled rally.<\/div>\n
The company will replace swimming pool equipment distributor PoolCorp (POOL.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> on the benchmark index before the start of trading on June 22. Marvell shares \u200bjumped nearly 6% in extended trading.<\/div>\n
The inclusion comes after the company \u200breported a GAAP profit in the three months through December \u2060and over the sum of its most recent four quarters, overcoming a \u200bkey barrier that had previously kept it out.<\/div>\n
Marvell’s shares have more than tripled \u200bso far this year, bolstered by a broader rally in chip stocks on hopes for robust AI-related demand.<\/div>\n
This week alone its shares have gained roughly 29%, partly due to \u200bNvidia (NVDA.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> CEO Jensen Huang calling the chipmaker the “next trillion dollar company”. The \u200bcompany’s market value was $276.81 billion, as of Friday’s close.<\/div>\n
Marvell and larger rival Broadcom (AVGO.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> design custom \u200cchips \u2060for cloud-computing companies’ specific data-center needs, a business that has grown rapidly as Big Tech looks to reduce reliance on Nvidia’s costly and supply-constrained AI processors.<\/div>\n
In its most recent quarterly earnings, Marvell forecast its custom chip business would surpass $10 \u200bbillion in revenue in \u200bfiscal 2029.<\/div>\n
Its \u2060inclusion in S&P 500 reflects how the AI boom is reshaping major U.S. equity benchmarks, with chip and data-center \u200binfrastructure companies commanding increasingly large weights as investors bet on \u200bsustained demand \u2060from cloud providers and AI workloads.<\/div>\n
The move would trigger buying from index funds and ETFs that track the S&P 500, as passive managers are required to \u2060hold \u200bconstituents in line with their benchmark weights.<\/div>\n
Separately, contract \u200bmanufacturer Flex (FLEX.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> will also be added to the index, replacing packaged food company Campbell’s (CPB.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
