BRASILIA, June 5 (Reuters) – Brazil plans to announce its first-ever sovereign bond issuance in China, denominated in \u200byuan, during a trip by a large delegation of \u200cgovernment officials to the Asian country later this month, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.<\/div>\n
The planned issuance of so-called \u200bPanda bonds follows Brazil’s first euro-denominated bond sale since \u200b2014, which raised \u20ac5 billion in April, adding momentum to a \u2060strategy unveiled earlier this year to expand the Latin American country’s \u200bpresence in international debt markets, including through issuances in currencies \u200bother than the U.S. dollar.<\/div>\n
The official agenda in Shanghai and Beijing led by Brazilian Finance Minister Dario Durigan is expected to run from June \u200b24 to 26.<\/div>\n
The Finance Ministry declined to comment.<\/div>\n
The trip, which \u200bhas been in the works for months, comes after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva \u200crecently praised \u2060deepening trade ties with China – Brazil’s largest trading partner – following setbacks with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which proposed new tariffs on Brazilian goods and designated local criminal groups as “terrorist \u200borganizations.”<\/div>\n
Ahead of the \u200bminister’s visit, \u2060Brazilian officials will travel to China next week for a financial subcommittee meeting involving agencies from \u200bboth countries.<\/div>\n
During the preparatory trip, Brazil will highlight \u200bfinancial \u2060instruments developed under Lula’s sustainability agenda, including blended finance auctions under the EcoInvest program, the proposed Tropical Forest Forever Facility, or TFFF, and progress \u2060in building \u200ba domestic carbon market.<\/div>\n
Officials see these \u200btools as key to boosting Chinese direct investment in strategic sectors of the \u200beconomy.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
