ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT, June 6 (Reuters) – Pope Leo may have traded his life in Chicago for the ornate \u200bapartments at the Vatican’s apostolic palace, but he \u200cstill plans to root for his old national team at the World Cup this month.<\/div>\n
Leo, the first U.S. leader of the global Catholic \u200bChurch, told a journalist aboard his flight from Rome \u200bto Madrid on Saturday that he will be \u2060supporting the U.S. soccer team when the 48-team tournament \u200bstarts on Thursday.<\/div>\n
“I would certainly support the U.S.,” said the \u200bpontiff. “I don’t know how many games I’ll be able to see but I wish them all the best.”<\/div>\n
The U.S., who are co-hosting the \u200btournament with Canada and Mexico, will play Paraguay, Australia \u200band Turkey in Group D.<\/div>\n
Leo, originally from a south Chicago suburb, served \u200cas \u2060a missionary and bishop in Peru for decades before becoming pope. He said in an interview last year he would root for Peru over the U.S. in any soccer \u200bmatch-ups.<\/div>\n
Peru failed to \u200bqualify for \u2060this year’s tournament, opening up a papal blessing for the U.S. team.<\/div>\n
The pope, who is \u200bon a week-long tour of Spain and the Canary \u200bIslands, \u2060also revealed a firm preference on Saturday between bitter Spanish soccer rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.<\/div>\n
Asked by another journalist which \u2060of \u200bthose teams he roots for, Leo, \u200bborn Robert Prevost, paused briefly. “The pope is for all teams,” he responded. “Prevost is \u200bfor Real Madrid.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
