BAGHDAD, June 6 (Reuters) – Iraq’s World Cup striker, Aymen Hussein, was held and questioned for nearly seven \u200bhours at Chicago’s O’Hare airport after arriving with the squad \u200cearly on Saturday, an Iraqi sporting official said.<\/div>\n
Hussein was finally allowed in, but the team’s photographer was barred from entering the United States, said the \u200bofficial who works for the Iraqi Olympic Committee, but has \u200bclose contacts with the team.<\/div>\n
There was no immediate comment \u2060from the Iraqi Football Association, or from Hussein, a talismanic figure who scored \u200bthe goal that secured the team’s qualification for the finals.<\/div>\n
U.S. Immigration \u200band Customs Enforcement and the Homeland Security Department did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment on the reported questioning that was also covered by Iraqi \u200bmedia.<\/div>\n
Fans came out in the early hours of the morning to \u200bgreet the Iraq squad at the airport, holding flags and asking players to \u200cpose \u2060for pictures less than a week before the start of the tournament, video on social media showed.<\/div>\n
Hussein’s phone was inspected after he arrived, the Iraqi official said.<\/div>\n
“National team photographer Talal Salah was held \u200bfor more than 10 \u200bhours, underwent \u2060similar phone checks, and was ultimately denied entry into the United States,” the official added.<\/div>\n
Iraq are returning \u200bto the World Cup for the first time \u200bsince making \u2060their debut 40 years ago.<\/div>\n
Hussein, 30, leads a potent frontline that also features Ipswich Town’s Ali Al-Hamadi and talented youngsters Ali Jassim and Youssef \u2060Amyn.<\/div>\n
Iraq \u200bface France, Senegal and Norway in Group \u200bI.<\/div>\n
The tournament being co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico gets under way on \u200bThursday.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
