BEIRUT\/JERUSALEM, June 7 (Reuters) – The Israeli military has struck Hezbollah infrastructure in the southern suburbs of the \u200bLebanese capital Beirut, known as Dahiyeh, the first strike on \u200cthe militant group’s stronghold since an April 16 ceasefire was brokered.<\/div>\n
The ceasefire has not halted the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, with Israel saying it \u200bis working to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure on its borders.<\/div>\n
Hezbollah has rejected \u200bproposals linking a ceasefire to its disarmament, saying Israel must \u2060first halt its attacks and withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon.<\/div>\n
In a \u200bjoint statement with his defence minister, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the \u200bstrike on Dahiyeh was ordered in response to Hezbollah firing toward Israeli territory.<\/div>\n
There were no immediate reports of casualties.<\/div>\n
The military said earlier it had intercepted two projectiles that \u200bcrossed into Israeli territory from Lebanon, after sirens sounded in the areas \u200bof Yiftah and Ramot Naftali. Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for the launches.<\/div>\n
Israel’s military also \u200cissued \u2060an evacuation warning to the residents of the southern Lebanese city of Tyre and its surrounding areas on Sunday ahead of possible strikes.<\/div>\n
Iran has made a ceasefire in Lebanon between its close ally and Israel a condition for \u200bany peace deal \u200bwith the United \u2060States.<\/div>\n
Hezbollah entered the war on March 2, saying it was retaliating for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader at the \u200bstart of a conflict that has since killed thousands \u200bin Lebanon \u2060and displaced more than a million people.<\/div>\n
Israel continued to carry out strikes in Lebanon even before March 2, despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that took effect in \u2060November \u200b2024. It said its attacks are aimed \u200bat Hezbollah members and infrastructure.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
