KYIV, June 7 (Reuters) – Russian forces deliberately struck a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near Ukraine’s Chornobyl power plant, \u200bPresident Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday, in an “extremely vile” \u200cattack that did not lead to a spike in radiation.<\/div>\n
The strike significantly damaged a fuel-reception building metres away from where “large amounts of nuclear material” \u200bis stored, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, \u200bwhich said it had been briefed by Ukraine.<\/div>\n
Kyiv’s state atomic \u2060agency Energoatom said no spent fuel had been stored in \u200bthe building at the time of the attack. A resulting fire \u200bwas extinguished, and no injuries were reported.<\/div>\n
Russia has not publicly commented on the alleged strike on the facility, which is located around 15 km (9 miles) \u200bfrom the Chornobyl plant, the site of the world’s worst \u200bnuclear disaster.<\/div>\n
“An extremely critical infrastructure facility \u2013 and an extremely vile Russian strike,” Zelenskiy \u200cwrote \u2060on X, adding that Russia had used a Shahed attack drone.<\/div>\n
“As of now, there are no readings exceeding normal background radiation levels. But there is certainly an increase in Russia’s brazenness, which \u200blong ago went \u200boff the \u2060charts.”<\/div>\n
In a statement, the IAEA said a team would soon visit the site “to inspect the impact”.<\/div>\n
In \u200bFebruary 2025, a Russian Shahed drone damaged a containment \u200barch \u2060over the Chornobyl reactor that was destroyed in the April 1986 explosion and meltdown. Russia, which regularly attacks Ukrainian cities and infrastructure \u2060with drones \u200band missiles, denied responsibility.<\/div>\n
Kyiv and Moscow \u200bhave also traded accusations of attacking the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern \u200bUkraine, Europe’s largest.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
