June 7 (Reuters) – The White House is considering a plan \u200bto buy the Chagos Islands from \u200cMauritius, the Telegraph reported on Sunday.<\/div>\n
U.S. officials have drawn up a proposal to bypass the \u200bU.K. and make their own deal \u200bto take control of Diego Garcia, the \u2060report said.<\/div>\n
Reuters could not immediately confirm \u200bthe report. The White House and the UK \u200bForeign Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/div>\n
The plan is among several options being \u200bdrafted by the White House, in \u200ba paper aimed at providing alternatives to British Prime \u200cMinister \u2060Keir Starmer ceding sovereignty of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius, the report said.<\/div>\n
The White House has been in regular discussions with \u200bDowning Street \u200babout securing \u2060the future of Diego Garcia, the report added.<\/div>\n
Britain’s government in \u200bApril put on hold its deal to \u200bcede \u2060sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, home to the U.S.-British Diego Garcia air base, \u2060which \u200bhas been criticised by Trump.<\/div>\n
