NICOSIA, June 8 (Reuters) – The European Union said on Monday it had imposed sanctions on two Iranian individuals \u200band a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard \u200cCorps for threatening the freedom of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, through which around a fifth of the world’s oil flows.<\/div>\n
The \u200bmove marked the first time the bloc has \u200bused a new powers to sanction Iran for \u2060restricting freedom of navigation.<\/div>\n
The EU said in a written statement \u200bthat it had added the Hormozgan Provincial Command of \u200bthe Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy to its sanctions list, as well as Mohammad Akbarzadeh and Hamid Hosseini.<\/div>\n
It said Akbarzadeh \u200bis Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the \u200bIRGC Navy and Hosseini is a representative of Iran\u2019s Oil, Gas \u200cand \u2060Petrochemical Products Exporters\u2019 Union.<\/div>\n
Iran moved to close the Strait of Hormuz after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28.<\/div>\n
“Iran’s actions are unacceptable. In response member \u200bstates have approved \u200bsanctions against \u2060Iranian entities and individuals involved in disrupting transit through the Strait of Hormuz,” \u200bKaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, \u200bsaid \u2060earlier at a news conference in Cyprus.<\/div>\n
“This is the first time the EU has applied its new freedom \u2060of \u200bnavigation regime and when necessary \u200bwe will apply it again,” added Kallas.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
