WASHINGTON, June 8 (Reuters) – A federal judge in Washington has been asked to block President Donald Trump\u2019s plan to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed \u200bmartial arts bout at the White House next week and to \u200chalt construction of the metal arena structure called “the Claw” on the South Lawn of the iconic executive residence.<\/div>\n
Two Washington-area residents in a asked U.S. District Judge \u200bAmit Mehta to issue a temporary restraining order halting the event, \u200bscheduled to coincide with Trump\u2019s 80th birthday on June 14.<\/div>\n
Mehta on \u2060Monday asked the lawyers in the case to propose a schedule to \u200bhear the emergency request.<\/div>\n
Dubbed \u201cUFC Freedom 250″, the event is set to feature fighting inside \u200bthe 92-foot-tall (28 meters), octagon-shaped cage with weigh-ins at the nearby Lincoln Memorial.<\/div>\n
The lawsuit, filed on Saturday, alleges that authorization of the program by the National Park Service and Interior \u200bDepartment was unlawful and should be set aside.<\/div>\n
\u201cThis nation\u2019s public monuments should \u200bnot be loaned out for private exploitation,\u201d the plaintiffs said.<\/div>\n
In a statement, the White House \u200ccalled \u2060the case an \u201cobstructionist, baseless, and dilatory lawsuit\u201d and said the event \u201cis no different than the various other White House-hosted events on the South Lawn and properly permitted events on the Ellipse and National Mall throughout the year.\u201d<\/div>\n
The lawsuit \u200bcontends the event violates \u200brules barring sporting \u2060events on the South Lawn and at the Lincoln Memorial, and that construction of the large arena structure requires \u200bcongressional authorization.<\/div>\n
Trump is facing other lawsuits over construction projects \u200bon the \u2060White House and elsewhere in the capital, including his plan to build a 90,000-square-foot ballroom on the site of the demolished East Wing, and his proposal to renovate and \u2060close The \u200bJohn F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
