TOKYO, May 25 (Reuters) – Toshifumi Suzuki, the founder of Seven-Eleven Japan and widely regarded \u200bas the father of Japan’s convenience store \u200cindustry, died of heart failure on May 18, Seven & i Holdings (3382.T)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> said on Monday. He was 93.<\/div>\n
Born in \u200bNagano in 1932, Suzuki joined retailer Ito-Yokado \u200bin 1963 after working at a book \u2060wholesaler. Defying scepticism at the time, Suzuki \u200bpartnered with Southland Corp, the U.S. operator of \u200b7-Eleven, to launch Seven-Eleven Japan in 1973, opening the first store in Tokyo the following year.<\/div>\n
He pioneered the use \u200bof data to tailor inventory and built \u200ba business model centred on ready-to-eat meals and rapid inventory \u200cturnover, \u2060helping transform convenience stores into a cornerstone of Japan’s retail landscape.<\/div>\n
Suzuki also led the successful restructuring and rescue of Southland in the early 1990s \u200bafter the \u200b7-Eleven parent \u2060filed for bankruptcy due to massive debt from a leveraged buyout.<\/div>\n
Suzuki went \u200bon to establish Seven & i Holdings \u200bin \u20602005 and oversaw its expansion into a retail conglomerate. The avid book reader stepped down as chairman \u2060in \u200b2016 after a management dispute \u200bbut remained an influential figure in Japan’s retail industry.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
