A blast of flames erupted and shockwaves rattled the boat while the rocket climbed into the sky.<\/div><div>The arrival of SpaceX has brought good business to Reyes and his family. \u200bSince the establishment of Starbase, Elon Musk\u2019s company town, his charter boat business has picked up as space fans flock to the area for a glimpse of launches. Reyes&#8217; nephew works at SpaceX as a welder, driving a Tesla Cybertruck.<\/div><div>But the same rockets \u200cReyes sees lifting his family\u2019s fortunes are also shaking his mother\u2019s home. Shockwaves from launches are cracking the ceiling, loosening window seals and sinking the foundation. She\u2019s among dozens of residents now suing Musk\u2019s company for damage.<\/div><div>\u201cYou can\u2019t stop progress,\u201d Reyes said.<\/div><div>Many of the people in the Rio Grande Valley region surrounding Starbase \u2013 the company town centered around SpaceX\u2019s rocket operations \u2013 have arrived at a similar conclusion. They\u2019re willing to ride the wave of Musk\u2019s interplanetary ambitions and accept the consequences that come with it.<\/div><div>While SpaceX\u2019s rapid expansion is bringing jobs, visitors and global attention, it is also fueling lawsuits, environmental concerns and a growing divide among the 1.4 million residents of the Rio Grande Valley.<\/div><div>After SpaceX\u2019s record\u2011setting $1.75 trillion IPO on Friday \u2013 which will \u200braise $75 billion partly to scale Starship from intermittent test launches to potentially weekly flights \u2013 the pressures facing residents around Starbase are set to intensify.<\/div><div>\u201cThis company is literally shaking the earth,\u201d said Tino Villarreal, city commissioner of Brownsville, a city of 185,000 people that borders Starbase. \u201cBy the \u200bamount of workforce it wants to produce, by the actual wavelengths that are shaking our soil.\u201d<\/div><div>SpaceX declined to comment for this story.<\/div><div>The clashing realities of Starbase were underscored ahead of the Starship launch last month \u2013 the largest rocket take-off \u2060and landing in the Indian Ocean \u2013 when contract worker Jose Bautista, 25, suffered a fatal fall at a nearby SpaceX facility, an episode first reported by the San Antonio Express-News. He was the most recent SpaceX worker to die or suffer serious injuries in Musk\u2019s rush to colonize Mars.<\/div><div>On TikTok, a video posted \u200bby local policy researcher Etienne Rosas demanding the company take accountability generated thousands of likes. A cousin of Bautista thanked him in the comment thread, adding \u201cmy family is in need of prayers.\u201d<\/div><div>But others defended SpaceX in response to Rosas, claiming the company wasn\u2019t responsible for the death. One person suggested that Bautista, even \u200bin death, would be able to \u201csee an accident for what it is.\u201d The person, who didn\u2019t respond to Reuters\u2019 request for comment, added: \u201cProjects of magnitude like the Hoover Dam for example always claim many lives and the project continues. It\u2019s the American way.\u201d<\/div><div>A spokesperson for the City of Starbase declined to comment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which is investigating the incident, declined to comment. A representative for Bautista\u2019s family declined comment.<\/div><div>The Cameron County Sheriff\u2019s office directed Reuters\u2019 comment requests to SpaceX.<\/div><div>SpaceX, which didn&#8217;t respond, has yet to acknowledge Bautista\u2019s death publicly.<\/div><h2>A ROCKET LAUNCHPAD IN THE BACKYARD<\/h2><div>When construction began on the Starbase SpaceX site in 2014, Boca Chica was a small cluster of homes along the Mexico border \u200band a popular beach for Brownsville residents. Now, two launch sites tower almost 500 feet above the beach and the expanding neighborhoods of Airstream trailers, tiny homes, and new mansions.<\/div><div>SpaceX hopes to one day manufacture components for as many as 1,000 Starships in the town\u2019s Starfactory \u2013 a 1 million square-foot advanced manufacturing \u200bfacility \u2013 and the Gigabay, a 380-foot-tall structure for assembling the rockets.<\/div><div>The town has its oddities. A SpaceX employee, Bobby Peden, was elected mayor last year soon after the town was incorporated. The town is setting up a police force, and has discussed opening its own municipal court \u2013 in which Peden would serve as interim judge.<\/div><div>At the \u200clocal school, Ad Astra, \u2060young children are taught to work \u201cwith numbers into the thousands \u2013 far beyond kindergarten standards,\u201d according to the school\u2019s website. The local bar, Astropub, is only open to SpaceX employees.<\/div><div>\u201cWhen I showed up, we had one street with houses, we were building rockets in tents, and we didn\u2019t have water or a sewer system,\u201d said Kathryn Leuders, who was general manager of Starbase before it was incorporated. Now \u201cyou\u2019re raising families, and you\u2019re raising children in this community that is Starbase, that\u2019s also got a launchpad in its back yard. It\u2019s a really cool thing.\u201d<\/div><div>Like the Mars colony depicted in a massive mural on the side of Gigabay, the town serves as a potential model for the future of interplanetary colonies. On a recent evening ahead of the Starship launch, the streets buzzed at 5 p.m. with employees streaming from Starbase buildings on bicycles while convoys of Cybertrucks lined the highway to Brownsville, passing sculptures of Musk and a sign stating, \u201cMars Embassy. \u200bFuture Location.\u201d<\/div><div>\u201cI\u2019ve been to NASA, and you don\u2019t get anywhere near something like \u200bthis,\u201d said Nicholas Poindexter, a pest control worker and space enthusiast \u2060who had traveled from Indiana to see the Starship launch. \u201cLast time I was here I thought, holy cow, you could throw a rock and hit\u201d a rocket.<\/div><h2>STARBASE BOON TO REGION<\/h2><div>Many local officials have welcomed Starbase as a boon to one of America\u2019s poorest regions. An impact report produced by the Greater Brownsville Economic Development Corporation in March stated that Starbase has created 5,000 jobs and brought in $100 million in tourism revenue over the last year.<\/div><div>Wearing a SpaceX \u2018Starship\u2019 t-shirt, Brownsville \u200bcity commissioner Villarreal pointed out new restaurants serving the increasingly affluent workforce, in between boarded-up store fronts and run-down homes.<\/div><div>Musk \u201chas moved at the speed of light, and I think that\u2019s helped Brownsville also really move a \u200blot faster in our growth and development,\u201d said \u2060Villarreal. \u201cIt\u2019s injected a steroid into Brownsville.\u201d<\/div><div>Some local Rio Grande Valley residents initially welcomed SpaceX. Maria Pointer lived in the region for almost two decades when she sold her home to SpaceX in 2020 after meeting with Musk. \u201cWe were excited,\u201d she said. \u201cI really felt, at the time, that we deserved the moon as the gas station to wherever all the Elons of the world wanted to go in interstellar space.\u201d<\/div><div>Over time, Pointer has become less optimistic, saying the town has become less friendly. In April, she went to Starfactory to film an interview with an Italian news crew, beneath a huge \u201cX\u201d near the entrance to the building, where her kitchen once stood. \u2060A security guard approached \u200band instructed them to leave. \u201cIt was very military,&#8221; she said.<\/div><div>Other residents of neighboring towns \u2013 Laguna Vista, Port Isabel and South Padre Island \u2013 claim the Starship launches are damaging their homes, according \u200bto a class-action lawsuit filed in April against SpaceX.<\/div><div>One plaintiff, who declined to speak on the record at her attorney\u2019s direction, showed Reuters her Port Isabel home. Cabinets sit unevenly, doors no longer close, and chipboard covers warped flooring she said was damaged by mold after a shower pipe burst following a rocket launch. She estimates foundation repairs at about $100,000, more than half the \u200bhome\u2019s value.<\/div><div>\u201cThey&#8217;re wanting to get to Mars,\u201d she said. \u201cBut what about us that are here? I&#8217;m here now.
