BEIJING, May 25 (Reuters) – Chinese coking coal prices soared on Monday to their highest in nearly two weeks, \u200bas a wave of stringent safety checks at coal mines following a \u200cdeadly mine accident in a key production hub triggered expectations of tightening supply.<\/div>\n
A gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in the northern province of Shanxi late on Friday has killed 82 people, the \u200bcountry’s deadliest mining accident since at least 2009.<\/div>\n
The mine is owned by Shanxi Tongzhou \u200bCoal Coking Group and all four of its mines have been \u2060closed and company executives detained, local officials said at a news conference on Sunday.<\/div>\n
State-run \u200bnewspaper the People’s Daily published an editorial on the accident on its front page \u200bon Sunday morning, calling for greater attention to safety in production and to “completely reverse the tendency to prioritise development over safety.”<\/div>\n
The most-traded coking coal contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) hit its price \u200blimit up, jumping by 7.97% to 1,266.5 yuan ($186.77) per metric ton, its highest level \u200bsince May 12.<\/div>\n
The most-active DCE coke contract surged by 7.99% to 1,879 yuan a ton, its \u200cstrongest \u2060since May 6.<\/div>\n
A survey by consultancy Mysteel showed that several other coal mines in Shanxi have halted production for three to five days for safety checks, which would reduce raw coking coal supply by 288,000 tons per day.<\/div>\n
“Coking coal supply is set to \u200bcontract while demand remains \u200bresilient, underpinning prices \u2060in the short run,” analysts at Wuchan Zhongda Futures said in a note.<\/div>\n
Iron ore prices pared some earlier gains as weekly \u200bshipments from Australia and Brazil jumped by 22% on the week as \u200bper Mysteel \u2060data.<\/div>\n
The most-active DCE contract closed daytime trade up 0.06% at 793 yuan a ton while the benchmark June iron ore on the Singapore Exchange was 0.49% higher at $106.7 a ton by 0809 GMT.<\/div>\n
Steel benchmarks \u2060on the \u200bShanghai Futures Exchange mostly gained ground on higher raw materials \u200bcosts.<\/div>\n
Rebar gained 1.48%, hot-rolled coil rose 1.39%, wire rod advanced 2.36% while stainless steel was little changed.<\/div>\n
