{"id":1767,"date":"2026-06-12T13:41:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T13:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=1767"},"modified":"2026-06-12T13:41:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T13:41:59","slug":"us-canada-delay-opening-of-new-bridge-after-trump-raised-objections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=1767","title":{"rendered":"US, Canada delay opening of new bridge after Trump raised objections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) &#8211; The U.S. and Canada have decided to delay the \u200copening of a new $4.7 billion bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, that was set to open in the coming days after U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year threatened to block the crossing.<\/div>\n<div>A formal ribbon-cutting had been planned for Friday for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, according to invitations seen by Reuters.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Canada \u200band the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge, taking the necessary time to resolve any \u200boutstanding issues,&#8221; the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said.<\/div>\n<div>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada agreed to delay the \u2060opening at the request of the Trump administration.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;We agreed to delay the opening and take the necessary time to resolve outstanding issues,&#8221; \u200bCarney said at an event in Toronto, without detailing what those issues were.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;For a bridge that is going to be in place \u200band serve Canadians, Americans, others for decades, the question of a few weeks is time well spent,&#8221; he added.<\/div>\n<div>Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said on X that while officials want to see the bridge open, &#8220;Canada need not fall on bent knee to make it happen.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, told \u200bThe Detroit News that he and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick are leading discussions with Canada about opening the bridge. Lutnick&#8217;s office did \u200bnot immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/div>\n<div>The White House has not commented.<\/div>\n<div>Trump in February cited Canada&#8217;s refusal to stock some U.S. alcoholic beverages on \u200cCanadian store \u2060shelves, Canada&#8217;s tariffs on dairy products and its trade talks with China as grounds for why he might not allow the bridge to open.<\/div>\n<div>Matthew Moroun, owner of the rival Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit and Windsor, in February met with Lutnick and weeks earlier had donated $1 million to a Trump-aligned political action committee. House Democrats have suggested that Moroun used his influence to &#8220;jeopardize American commerce&#8221; to protect his company\u2019s bottom \u200bline.<\/div>\n<div>The Detroit International Bridge Company, which \u200bruns the Ambassador Bridge, did \u2060not respond to an emailed request for comment.<\/div>\n<div>Construction of the bridge, which began in 2018, was financed by Canada because the U.S. refused to pay for it. The costs will be covered by \u200btolls over 30 years.<\/div>\n<div>Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said at a Senate hearing last week that \u200bthe department was &#8220;good \u2060to go&#8221; to staff the Gordie Howe bridge.<\/div>\n<div>The new bridge will help ease truck traffic on the Ambassador Bridge into Detroit, the largest freight port on the U.S.-Canada border, which handled $126 billion of value traded by commercial trucks as of 2023.<\/div>\n<div>It will cut 20 minutes off the \u2060crossing time, \u200bsaving truckers $2.3 billion over 30 years, according to a University of Windsor study.<\/div>\n<div>Trump has \u200bmade a number of threats against Canada in his second term and drastically hiked tariffs on the U.S. northern neighbor.
