WASHINGTON, June 12 (Reuters) – The U.S. says it is close to signing a peace deal that would end the three-month-old war with Iran, though terms have not yet been made public.<\/div>\n
It \u200bis not clear at this point how any agreement would stack up \u200cagainst the 2015 deal with Iran, which lifted sanctions in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear activities.<\/div>\n
The agreement, signed by Iran, the U.S., Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, aimed to extend the time Iran would need to \u200bproduce a nuclear bomb from two to three months to a year. \u200bTehran says it has never had a nuclear weapons program.<\/div>\n
Trump pulled the \u2060U.S. out of the deal in 2018 during his first term in office and \u200bre-imposed sanctions. Iran began breaching its terms in 2019, and United Nations sanctions were reimposed \u200bin 2025. The deal is now effectively dead.<\/div>\n
Below are the main elements of the 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).<\/div>\n

SANCTIONS RELIEF<\/h2>\n
The U.S., European Union and United Nations lifted sanctions \u200bthat targeted Iran’s oil, gas, petrochemical, banking, shipping and auto sectors, as well as \u200bits trade in gold and minerals. The EU and U.S. also removed the Central Bank of \u200cIran \u2060and other entities and people from sanctions lists. The U.S. allowed sales of commercial aircraft and imports of Iranian carpets and food.<\/div>\n

URANIUM ENRICHMENT<\/h2>\n
Iran agreed to cap enrichment at 3.67% purity for 15 years, far below the 90% purity needed to produce a weapon. \u200bThat is also below \u200bthe 20% level \u2060Iran had produced before the deal.<\/div>\n
Iran also agreed to cap its enriched uranium stockpile at 300 kilograms, down from the much larger amounts \u200bit had previously produced, and reduce the number of centrifuges \u200bfrom 19,000 \u2060to 6,100. Excess material was downblended to the level of natural uranium or shipped out of the country. That reduced Iran’s stockpile by 98%, according to the United States.<\/div>\n
The underground \u2060Fordow enrichment \u200bfacility was to be converted into a research \u200bcenter.<\/div>\n

PLUTONIUM PRODUCTION<\/h2>\n
Iran agreed to redesign its heavy-water reactor at Arak so it could not produce weapons-grade plutonium.<\/div>\n

MONITORING<\/h2>\n
The International \u200bAtomic Energy Agency was given wide-ranging inspection powers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
