June 13 (Reuters) – Amazon (AMZN.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> CEO \u200bAndy Jassy was among tech leaders who raised concerns to \u200csenior Trump administration officials this week about security risks in Anthropic\u2019s most advanced AI models, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.<\/div>\n
Amazon did not immediately respond \u200bto a request for comment.<\/div>\n
Citing national security concerns, the Trump administration \u200bon Friday directed Anthropic to block any foreign nationals, whether \u2060inside or outside the U.S., from using its latest models, Fable \u200b5 and Mythos 5. In response, Anthropic said it would disable access to \u200bthe models globally.<\/div>\n
In a blog post, Anthropic said on Friday that the U.S. government believes there is a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking,” a safeguard that would prevent Fable \u200b5 from being used in identifying software vulnerabilities, the company said.<\/div>\n
The U.S. \u200bgovernment restrictions came in the form of an export control, Anthropic said in its \u200cblog \u2060post. The U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which oversees export controls, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/div>\n
Some experts who favor export controls on advanced AI models found the Trump administration’s \u200baction puzzling because \u200bit affects allied \u2060nations as well as adversaries.<\/div>\n
\u201cThis was not well thought-out,” said Jimmy Goodrich, a senior fellow at the University \u200bof California’s Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation. “It even \u200bbans Canadians \u2060and Brits employed at Anthropic from doing research and development.\u201d<\/div>\n
The order came just as a previous dispute between Trump administration officials and Anthropic, which has confidentially filed for \u2060a \u200bU.S. initial public offering, showed signs of \u200beasing across parts of the U.S. government.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
