{"id":1937,"date":"2026-06-14T11:37:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T11:37:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=1937"},"modified":"2026-06-14T11:37:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T11:37:36","slug":"swiss-voters-set-to-reject-population-cap-in-referendum-avoiding-eu-clash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=1937","title":{"rendered":"Swiss voters set to reject population cap in referendum, avoiding EU clash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><div><div><ul><li>Summary<\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><\/div><\/div><div>ZURICH, June 14 (Reuters) &#8211; Switzerland on Sunday rejected a referendum proposal \u200bto cap its population at 10 million, a projection showed, as voters prioritised economic stability and the \u200ccountry&#8217;s ties with the European Union over immigration concerns.<\/div><div>A preliminary projection published by national broadcaster SRF indicated about 45% of voters were in favour of the proposal and 55% against.<\/div><div>The referendum, which was likened to Britain&#8217;s 2016 Brexit vote, had put businesses on edge due to concerns it \u200bcould lead to the end of free movement of labour between Switzerland and the EU, its main trading \u200bpartner.<\/div><div>The proposal championed by the right-wing Swiss People&#8217;s Party stipulated that the population must not exceed \u206010 million before 2050, and that if it did so for two years, Switzerland should scrap its freedom of movement \u200baccord with the EU.<\/div><div>Urs Bieri from polling firm GFS Bern said the vote failed because although many people were worried \u200babout the rising population, they were not convinced by the plan and worried about the possible side-effects.<\/div><div>&#8220;From the very beginning it has been presented as the chaos initiative. Voters were worried about negative consequences for Switzerland&#8217;s relationship with the EU and for the labour market,&#8221; he said.<\/div><div>&#8220;People are \u200balso worried about things like having enough care and health workers. Also there&#8217;s a feeling that in the current international \u200benvironment it&#8217;s not sensible for a small country to do this,&#8221; Bieri added.<\/div><h2>CLOSE OUTCOME HAD BEEN EXPECTED<\/h2><div>The Swiss population already stands at 9.1 \u200cmillion \u2060and has grown far more quickly than in the surrounding EU. Foreigners make up nearly 28% of the Swiss population, which official projections forecast will reach 10 million by the early 2040s.<\/div><div>Polls had forecast a close outcome, and the result tallied with a final survey by pollsters GFS Bern, which had predicted the proposal would be narrowly rejected.<\/div><div>Still, the substantial backing for the measure \u200bsits alongside growing support for \u200bpolicies aimed at curbing \u2060immigration across Europe.
