WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) – U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, the \u200bformer head of the chamber’s Republican majority, \u200cwas admitted to hospital Sunday morning, a spokesman said in a statement.<\/div>\n
McConnell’s spokesman, David Popp, \u200bdid not elaborate on why the \u200bRepublican lawmaker from Kentucky was hospitalized, \u2060and did not provide an update on \u200bhis condition. He said in a statement \u200bthat McConnell “is receiving excellent care.”<\/div>\n
Two of McConnell’s neighbors told Reuters they saw the senator on a \u200bstretcher being loaded into an ambulance around \u200b9 a.m. ET outside his Washington, D.C. home.<\/div>\n
McConnell, 84, \u200cis \u2060a former Senate majority leader who helped steer Republicans’ legislation and appointees through Congress. He announced last year that he \u200bwill retire \u200bwhen his \u2060current term ends in early 2027.<\/div>\n
He has struggled publicly with \u200bhealth issues in recent years, including \u200bfreezing \u2060up while speaking to reporters in 2023. He was hospitalized for eight days in \u2060February \u200bafter experiencing flu-like symptoms.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
