WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act to \u200baddress constraints in weapons supply and development \u200cfor munitions production and supply chains, according to a memo made public on Tuesday.<\/div>\n
The move comes amid growing \u200bconcern in Washington about the capacity of \u200bU.S. weapons manufacturers to meet demand.<\/div>\n
Solid rocket \u2060motors, igniters and guidance systems are among the \u200bmost critical and capacity-constrained sub-systems needed for weapons \u200bproduction, both for legacy systems and future modernization programs.<\/div>\n
“I hereby find that conditions exist which may pose a direct \u200bthreat to the national defense or its preparedness \u200bprograms,” Trump said in a June 11 memorandum to the \u200cPentagon \u2060chief.<\/div>\n
He cited “limited production capacity, fragile supply chains, long-lead dependencies, and related production bottlenecks.”<\/div>\n
The memo to the defense secretary delegates authority to pursue voluntary agreements \u200bwith private \u200bindustry aimed \u2060at shoring up the defense industrial base.<\/div>\n
The Defense Production Act allows the president \u200bor those granted authority to consult \u200bwith \u2060representatives of industry, business, and other interests to establish voluntary agreements to help provide for the national \u2060defense, \u200bbut only when conditions exist \u200bthat may pose a direct threat.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
