{"id":2196,"date":"2026-06-17T10:08:56","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2196"},"modified":"2026-06-17T10:08:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T10:08:56","slug":"northern-ireland-tops-uks-economic-growth-charts-since-brexit-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2196","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland tops UK&#8217;s economic growth charts since Brexit vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>June 17 (Reuters) &#8211; This \u200btime 10 years ago, few would have predicted that Northern Ireland would be topping the United Kingdom&#8217;s \u200ceconomic growth charts after the 2016 vote to leave the European Union.<\/div>\n<div>Its relative success is not a straightforward story about Brexit, however.<\/div>\n<div>Marie Doyle, partner with accountants Deloitte in Belfast, said the vote had caused enormous uncertainty across businesses there, as it did elsewhere in Britain.<\/div>\n<div>But in Northern Ireland&#8217;s \u200bcase, it was against a backdrop of rapid progress already underway.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;We are, and have been, a post-conflict society. We \u200bhave been on a quietly upward economic trajectory really since pre-Brexit &#8211; maybe the late noughties, the \u2060early teens, when we were starting to see some significant investment into Belfast,&#8221; Doyle said.<\/div>\n<div>Below are some of the indicators \u200bthat underline the Northern Irish economy&#8217;s strong performance.<\/div>\n<h2>ECONOMIC GROWTH<\/h2>\n<div>Northern Ireland&#8217;s economy grew by 16.5% from 2015 to 2023, outpacing every other \u200bmajor region of the UK. The same dataset shows the UK economy expanded by 11% over the same time frame, with Scotland&#8217;s economy ranking last with growth of 7%.<\/div>\n<h2>SERVICES BOOM<\/h2>\n<div>As in the rest of the UK, the services sector is dominant in Northern Ireland&#8217;s economy, but there \u200bhave been key differences in its performance.<\/div>\n<div>In contrast to a 24% drop in financial services output for the UK as a \u200bwhole between 2015 and 2023, in Northern Ireland it has increased by 50% \u2014 in part a reflection of its proximity to Dublin, one \u200cof \u2060the European Union&#8217;s financial centres that has benefitted from the UK&#8217;s exit from the EU single market.<\/div>\n<div>Retail has also thrived, whereas in the rest of the UK sales volumes remain below their pre-pandemic levels. Analysts say the permanent depreciation of sterling has helped tempt consumers in the Irish Republic to make frequent shopping trips to the North.<\/div>\n<h2>INTEGRATION WITH IRELAND&#8217;S ECONOMY<\/h2>\n<div>Northern Ireland&#8217;s economy is \u200bintegrating increasingly with the south, \u200bin part thanks to a \u2060burgeoning economic corridor between Dublin and Belfast \u2014 the latter finding favour with international firms because of its low labour costs, cheaper property and a skilled workforce.<\/div>\n<div>Whereas Ireland&#8217;s share of goods and \u200bservices in the Northern Irish economy &#8211; excluding the financial sector &#8211; stood at only 14% in \u200b2015, that rose \u2060to 26% in 2024, according to data from the NI Statistics Agency.<\/div>\n<div>The rest of the UK&#8217;s share of Northern Irish trade fell to 51% from 59% over the same time frame.<\/div>\n<div>Doyle said Deloitte had this year observed a surge in cross-border merger and acquisition \u2060deals.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;It&#8217;s more \u200bthan a supply chain, it&#8217;s an integrated business model on the island \u200bthat is really taking off,&#8221; she said.<\/div>\n<div>The Windsor Agreement agreed in 2023 \u2014 which allows Northern Ireland to simultaneously access the EU single market for goods and \u200bthe UK internal market \u2014 also represents a plus for the province&#8217;s manufacturing sector, Doyle said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2194\">Europe frets about US AI as tech world flocks to France for G7, VivaTech<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2190\">G7 leaders demand ceasefire in Lebanon, welcome Iran deal<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2188\">IEA sees gradual Hormuz recovery tipping into significant 2027 surplus<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its relative success is not a straightforward story about Brexit, however.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2195,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[104],"class_list":["post-2196","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-macro-matters"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
