The brazen killing was widely condemned by public officials \u200bbut became emblematic of Americans\u2019 frustration with rising healthcare costs and \u2060health insurance industry practices.<\/div><div>Mangione pleaded not guilty in December 2024 to state murder, weapons \u200band forgery charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.<\/div><div>His trial is set \u200bfor September before Justice Gregory Carro in Manhattan.<\/div><div>New York law allows murder defendants to argue that they cannot be held fully responsible for their actions because they were in a state \u200bof extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing.<\/div><div>Defendants who prevail can \u200breduce their conviction from murder to manslaughter, which carries significantly lower sentences.<\/div><div>Thompson led UnitedHealth Group&#8217;s (UNH.N)<svg><\/svg><span>, opens new tab<\/span> \u200cinsurance \u2060unit before he was shot dead in the early morning outside a hotel where he was staying for an investor conference.<\/div><div>Graphic footage of the killing and a five-day manhunt for a suspect made the case a media fixture and social media \u200bsensation. Mangione was arrested \u200bin Pennsylvania.<\/div><div>Mangione separately pleaded \u2060not guilty in April 2025 to murder, weapons and stalking charges brought by Manhattan federal prosecutors.<\/div><div>U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett, \u200bwho is overseeing that case, threw out the murder \u200band weapons \u2060charges over legal technicalities in a surprise ruling in January.
