May 25 (Reuters) – The head of \u200bthe World Health Organization said on Monday \u200cthat the fast-moving Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda was outpacing response efforts, giving the \u200blatest number of suspected deaths as 220.<\/div>\n
Addressing \u200ban online meeting of the African Union about \u2060the outbreak, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus \u200bsaid a delay in detecting Ebola cases meant responders \u200bwere now “playing catch-up” and the epidemic was likely to get worse before it gets better.<\/div>\n
Tedros said he would travel \u200bto Congo – the epicentre of the outbreak – on \u200bTuesday with another senior WHO official responsible for addressing health \u200cemergencies, \u2060Chikwe Ihekweazu.<\/div>\n
Earlier on Monday neighbouring Uganda reported two more Ebola cases, taking its total number of confirmed cases to seven, and Tedros said other countries bordering \u200bCongo were at \u200bhigh risk \u2060and should take immediate action.<\/div>\n
The WHO has declared the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo \u200bstrain of Ebola a public health emergency \u200bof \u2060international concern.<\/div>\n
Tedros said containing the fast-moving outbreak was complicated by the fact that Congo’s Ituri and North Kivu \u2060provinces were \u200bhighly insecure and there were \u200bno approved vaccines for Bundibugyo virus.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
