DUBAI, June 19 (Reuters) – Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon killed at least 15 people on Friday, state \u200bnews agency NNA said, while Israel said the attacks \u200claunched overnight were aimed at what it described as Hezbollah targets in several areas.<\/div>\n
Residents and domestic media said Israeli airstrikes and \u200bshelling hit several towns in the Nabatieh district \u200bovernight and into early Friday, in a bombardment that \u2060NNA said was among the heaviest in recent weeks.<\/div>\n
The \u200bIsraeli military said it had struck what it described \u200bas Hezbollah militants and infrastructure at several southern sites, in response to repeated violations of the ceasefire by the Iran-backed group.<\/div>\n
The escalation comes \u200ba day after Israel published a map showing an \u200bexpanded military control zone in southern Lebanon beyond which it said \u200cit \u2060would not rule out attacks, raising questions over Wednesday’s U.S. interim peace deal with Iran.<\/div>\n
The agreement calls for an end to fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon, and for parties \u200bto respect Lebanon’s \u200bterritorial integrity \u2060and sovereignty.<\/div>\n
A senior Israeli official said Israel was engaged in “stubborn negotiations” with U.S. President \u200bDonald Trump’s administration over keeping troops deployed 10 \u200bkm (6.2 \u2060miles) inside southern Lebanon as it pursues Hezbollah.<\/div>\n
Israel has rejected calls to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah \u2060has \u200bkept up attacks on Israeli positions, \u200bsome employing explosive drones that have killed and wounded troops this week.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
