May 25 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department has again asked a federal judge to lift an injunction \u200bholding up progress on President Donald Trump’s ballroom project, saying \u200cSaturday’s shooting outside the White House showed an urgent need for improved security.<\/div>\n
The Justice Department, in a on Sunday, said the incident underscores the \u200bcritical need for “top level, state of the art security at \u200bthe White House, including the ballroom,” adding that it was \u2060vital for national security. It also asks for the lawsuit challenging \u200bthe project to be dismissed.<\/div>\n
The court filing stated: “This is a terrible, \u200btremendously harmful case to the United States of America, and all it stands for!”<\/div>\n
U.S. District Judge Richard Leon, an appointee of former President George W. Bush sitting \u200bin Washington, ruled in April that Trump lacked legal authority to \u200bbuild the ballroom without congressional approval. Leon issued an injunction that halted “above-ground construction \u200cof \u2060the planned ballroom,” but his order was quickly put on hold by an appeals court. Construction has continued.<\/div>\n
The DOJ had previously asked Leon to dissolve his injunction and throw out the lawsuit over the ballroom after \u200ba foiled attack at \u200bthe White \u2060House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April. Leon has not acted on that request.<\/div>\n
The lawsuit was filed by \u200bthe National Trust for Historic Preservation, a congressionally chartered \u200bnonprofit organization. \u2060It said it would not drop its lawsuit after the attack in April, despite the Justice Department’s request.<\/div>\n
