WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) – The U.S. Air Force on Wednesday awarded production contracts \u200bto General Atomics and Anduril Industries to build its first fleet \u200cof semi-autonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), moving a program that began just over two years ago from prototype to full-scale manufacturing.<\/div>\n
The department awarded production contracts to both companies \u2014 General \u200bAtomics for the FQ-42 and Anduril for the FQ-44, the Air \u200bForce said, without disclosing the cost or size of the \u2060order.<\/div>\n
The CCA program is central to the Air Force’s broader vision \u200bof human-machine teaming, pairing the autonomous aircraft with crewed fighters to extend reach, \u200bawareness, and survivability in contested environments. The Air Force ultimately intends to field about 1,000 combat-capable CCA, using continuous competition among vendors to drive down costs while scaling fighter \u200bcapacity.<\/div>\n
The contracts were awarded months ahead of schedule, a sign that \u200bboth aircraft meet mission requirements and are ready for manufacturing.<\/div>\n
“By moving fast from competitive selection \u200cinto \u2060full-scale manufacturing, we position ourselves to field highly credible and combat-ready semi-autonomous systems to stay ahead of the pacing challenge,” said Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink. “These contracts reaffirm our confidence in the strategic path forward for \u200bthe program to \u200bprocure over 150 \u2060combat capable CCA by the end of the decade.”<\/div>\n
Alongside the hardware contracts, the Air Force simultaneously moved forward \u200bon the software side of the program, awarding mission \u200bautonomy production \u2060contracts to a pool of six vendors: Anduril, General Atomics, Lockheed Martin (LMT.N)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>, Northrop Grumman (NOC.N)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>, RTX’s (RTX.N)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> Collins Aerospace, and Shield AI.<\/div>\n
In a notable departure from traditional \u2060Pentagon procurement, \u200bthe Air Force is pursuing a strategy \u200bit calls “software sold separately,” deliberately decoupling the purchase of the CCA’s mission autonomy software from its \u200bairframe.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
