June 19 (Reuters) – Diplomatic niceties broke down at the United Nations on Friday when Israel’s ambassador and the U.N. secretary-general’s special representative for children \u200band armed conflict became embroiled in a furious shouting \u200cmatch at a public hearing.<\/div>\n
At a meeting in New York to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the Israeli envoy, \u200bDanny Danon, demanded the resignation of Pramila Patten, who produced \u200ba report that blacklisted Israel for such alleged abuses for \u2060the first time, accusing her of bias.<\/div>\n
“You caved to the secretary-general’s \u200bobsession with targeting Israel,” Danon said, referring to U.N. chief Antonio Guterres.<\/div>\n
Another \u200bU.N. official, Vanessa Frazier, Guterres’ representative for children and armed conflict and compiler of a separate report that also blacklists Israel, interjected by shouting a point of \u200border. She demanded that Danon refrain from “personal attacks” and added that \u200bshe had “verified evidence.”<\/div>\n
Danon said Frazier should be quiet.<\/div>\n
“We are a member state, and \u200cyou \u2060work for the U.N., and you will be quiet now. You will be quiet … you and your shameful report,” he said.<\/div>\n
Frazier, Malta’s former U.N. ambassador, issued her report this week on behalf of Guterres warning \u200bthat Israeli settler \u200bgroups could be \u2060added to a global blacklist for violations against children as the U.N. chief voiced alarm at what \u200bhe called a “staggering” rise in violations against Palestinian children.<\/div>\n
Israel \u200bitself \u2060already features in that report’s so-called list of shame annexes for alleged violations.<\/div>\n
When Patten’s report was issued last month, Danon called it “a new low” \u2060and \u200bIsrael’s foreign ministry vowed to sever all \u200bties with Guterres, who leaves office after 10 years at the year-end.<\/div>\n
Both reports also \u200bblacklist Israel’s arch enemy Hamas.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
