TOKYO, June 20 (Reuters) – Japan plans to set a target of about $2.3 trillion in combined public \u200band private investment by 2040 across \u200c17 strategic sectors as part of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s new growth strategy, the Nikkei reported \u200bon Friday.<\/div>\n
The 370 trillion yen investment \u200binitiative, to be unveiled as early as \u2060next week, will focus on areas such \u200bas AI, chips and space development, as \u200bTakaichi seeks to use government spending to spur private-sector investment, the business daily said, without citing a \u200bsource for the information.<\/div>\n
A call by Reuters \u200bto the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday to seek \u200ccomment \u2060went unanswered outside business hours.<\/div>\n
The government is considering creating a multi-year budget framework to ensure stable funding for investments deemed critical to \u200beconomic security, \u200bsome of \u2060which may be financed through bridging bonds.<\/div>\n
Bridging bonds are used to \u200bcover temporary funding needs and are \u200bissued \u2060with guarantees on specific means to pay for redemption, allowing the heavily indebted government \u2060to \u200bargue that it is mindful \u200bof fiscal discipline even as it boosts spending.<\/div>\n
