KYIV, June 20 (Reuters) – President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff said on Saturday he was renouncing a \u200bPolish state medal after President Karol \u200cNawrocki stripped Zelenskiy of Poland’s top honour over a historical dispute.<\/div>\n
The move by Kyrylo Budanov threatens to deepen a \u200bdiplomatic rift between the close strategic \u200bpartners as Kyiv rallies allies to push \u2060Russia to end its war on Ukraine.<\/div>\n
Nawrocki \u200bsaid on Friday he was revoking the Order \u200bof the White Eagle from Zelenskiy after he renamed a military unit in honour of World War Two-era \u200bUkrainian insurgents blamed for massacring Poles.<\/div>\n
Budanov said \u200bhe was renouncing the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order \u200cof \u2060Merit of the Republic of Poland, awarded to him last year, to protest against a move he described as “a gift” for Russia.<\/div>\n
“Our nations \u200bhave long-standing \u200brelations and \u2060different pages of history – both heroic and tragic,” he posted on \u200bsocial media. “However, this should be an \u200boccasion \u2060for deep reflection, not crude political speculation.”<\/div>\n
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha had earlier called Nawrocki’s decision \u2060a “strategic \u200berror”, and Polish Prime Minister \u200bDonald Tusk, a Nawrocki opponent, urged both leaders to remain \u200bcalm.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
