JERUSALEM, June 21 (Reuters) – Israeli soldiers are free to act without restriction to eliminate threats \u200bin Lebanon, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on \u200cSunday, adding troops remained in position in what Israel refers to as a security zone.<\/div>\n
A ceasefire with Iran-backed Hezbollah took effect on Friday after \u200bmonths of escalating violence, but on Saturday Israeli strikes killed \u200bat least 20 people in Lebanon, Lebanon’s state news \u2060agency NNA reported.<\/div>\n
Israel said the strikes were a response to \u200bprojectiles fired by the Iran-backed group at its troops in southern \u200bLebanon, prompting attacks on what an Israeli official described as “Hezbollah targets”.<\/div>\n
Iranian officials have said Lebanon is the focal point for Sunday’s peace talks with the \u200bUnited States in Switzerland after Washington and Tehran signed a \u200bframework to halt the war between them that began at the end of \u200cFebruary, \u2060escalating tension across the region.<\/div>\n
The Israeli military invaded parts of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah maintains it has the right to fight Israeli forces in Lebanon, but would halt attacks on northern Israel.<\/div>\n
Katz \u200bsaid Israeli troops \u200bwould remain in \u2060all positions in what it calls a security zone, which extends about 10 km (6 miles) into \u200bsouthern Lebanon.<\/div>\n
Israel says that is to protect northern \u200bIsraeli communities.<\/div>\n
“All \u2060of the IDF’s achievements in the campaign in Lebanon are being preserved, with our forces deployed in the security zone along \u2060the Yellow \u200bLine in Lebanon and operating from \u200bthere inward against terrorists and terrorist infrastructures,” he said in Sunday’s statement.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
