MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) June 20 – Japanese fans celebrated their team’s4-0 victory over Tunisiain the 1,000th match in World Cup history on Saturday by staying behind at Monterrey\u2019s \u200bstadium to collect rubbish from the stands.<\/div>
The practice, known in \u200cJapan as gomi hiroi, reflects an emphasis on taking responsibility for shared spaces.<\/div>
Ken Okawa, 30, said he was happy to bring this tradition to his very first World Cup match \u200bas he stooped down to collect discarded cups and other garbage \u200bfrom the floor around his seat.<\/div>
“We are guests in Mexico,” \u2060he said. “I have been treated wonderfully, so this is my way of showing \u200bmy appreciation.”<\/div>
The practice is instilled from a very young age in Japan, where \u200bschoolchildren are taught to clean up their own classrooms.<\/div>
Miku Takeya, 41, said that the habit of tidying up after herself has become second nature.<\/div>
“It’s a natural part of our \u200bculture,” she said. “We do this to ensure that everything we use is left \u200bclean so that the next person can use it comfortably.”<\/div>

Ahead of Saturday’s match, Nuevo Le\u00f3n Governor Samuel Garc\u00eda said he had arranged for 20,000 trash bags to be distributed in the stadium during the match, \u200bas well as at \u200bFanfest and other \u2060tourist sites, following requests from Japanese fans, according to local media.<\/div>
While this practice has captured global attention, many Japanese \u200bfans say it is nothing out of the ordinary for \u200bthem.<\/div>
“It’s common \u2060sense in Japan,” said Ichiro Oyo, 27.<\/div>
Still, Ryo Matsuoka, 32, said he was proud to bring this part of Japanese culture to the world stage.<\/div>
“I think \u2060it is \u200ba matter of great pride that this \u200bis being showcased in a stadium like this, where people from all over the world are watching,” \u200bhe said.<\/div>
