MADRID, June 21 (Reuters) – Tourists and locals in Madrid struggled to cope with temperatures reaching up to 40 \u200bdegrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday as \u200cthe first official heatwave of 2026 set in, and authorities warned of over-exposure to the sun and an \u200bincreased risk of wildfires.<\/div>\n
Haily San Cesario, a \u200b22-year-old engineer visiting Madrid’s El Rastro flea \u2060market from Miami said: “I’m dressed all in white \u200bbecause it’s so hot, and I’m carrying my \u200blittle electric fan everywhere I go.”<\/div>\n
Aemet, the state-run weather forecaster, said 13 of Spain’s 17 regions are on orange \u200balert for heat on Sunday, while the Basque \u200bCountry, in the northwest, is on red alert, the highest \u200clevel. \u2060The heatwave will continue until Thursday.<\/div>\n
“The heat really is exhausting,” said Madrid resident Ana Garces, a 49-year-old social educator also visiting the market.<\/div>\n
The head \u200bof SNCF, \u200bthe French \u2060state-owned railway operator on Sunday, advised vulnerable people against taking the train during the \u200bheatwave, which on Saturday prompted a partial \u200balcohol \u2060ban in France, nationwide warnings in Germany and the closure of a soccer fan zone in Spain.<\/div>\n
The \u2060severe \u200bheat brought renewed concerns of \u200bits impact on people’s health, particularly the elderly.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
