{"id":2644,"date":"2026-06-22T07:37:28","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2644"},"modified":"2026-06-22T07:37:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T07:37:28","slug":"uks-starmer-expected-to-set-out-exit-timetable-as-burnham-waits-in-the-wings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=2644","title":{"rendered":"UK&#8217;s Starmer expected to set out exit timetable as Burnham waits in the wings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Summary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>LONDON, June 22 (Reuters) &#8211; Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected on Monday to set out a timetable for his departure and usher in an orderly transfer of power to rival Andy Burnham, \u200bpaving the way for Britain&#8217;s seventh leader in a decade.<\/div>\n<div>Less than two years after Starmer won a landslide election victory that promised to end \u200cBritain&#8217;s chaotic politics, one source said the prime minister had spent the weekend considering whether to step aside or fight a leadership contest.<\/div>\n<div>Skills minister Jacqui Smith told Times Radio early on Monday that she would have liked Starmer to stay on but he had been weighing what was best for the country, due to the &#8220;pressure that is being brought upon him&#8221;.<\/div>\n<h2>PRESSURE HAD BEEN BUILDING FOR MONTHS<\/h2>\n<div>The threat to Starmer, \u200bwhich has been building for months, increased sharply on Friday when Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, decisively won a parliamentary election to return to Westminster, beating a \u200bcandidate from Nigel Farage&#8217;s Reform UK party which has led national opinion polls for more than a year.<\/div>\n<div>That victory gave hope to Labour \u2060lawmakers that Burnham, a career politician known for his communication skills, could transform the fortunes of a party that has lost support under Starmer, whose popularity ratings have sunk \u200bto the lowest for any British leader.<\/div>\n<div>But the widely expected change of leader is not without risk.<\/div>\n<div>Beyond saying that the country needs fundamental change and to bring down the cost of \u200bliving, Burnham has yet to make clear his approach to foreign affairs, the economy and defence.<\/div>\n<div>Like Starmer he could find he has little room to manoeuvre, hemmed in by bond market investors opposed to any additional borrowing, and confronted by an angry electorate who believe the country is not working properly.<\/div>\n<div>Britain already has the highest borrowing costs in the Group of Seven wealthy nations due to its high debt and \u200binterest payments, years of anaemic economic growth, its struggles to cut spending and the need to invest in areas like defence.<\/div>\n<div>Investors spoken to by Reuters were divided over whether Burnham, who \u200bsaid last September that Britain had to get &#8220;beyond this thing of being in hock to the bond markets&#8221; would respect the need to reassure markets.<\/div>\n<div>He has since said he was misrepresented.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;In our \u200cview, a \u2060Burnham premiership would inherit a precarious fiscal situation with few tools to deliver meaningful change,&#8221; economists at Citibank said on Friday.<\/div>\n<h2>STARMER HAD PLEDGED TO FIGHT ANY CHALLENGE<\/h2>\n<div>Starmer had said on Friday he would stand in any formal Labour leadership contest that sought to replace him. But that appeared to change over the weekend.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;Keir likes to think about things,&#8221; said the source on condition of anonymity.<\/div>\n<div>Any change in leader, without even a contest within the party, could anger voters who will not have had a say in who is running the \u200bcountry from Downing Street.<\/div>\n<div>The former health minister Wes \u200bStreeting had said he had the backing \u2060of the 81 Labour lawmakers needed to enter a leadership race, but one senior figure in the party said they believed Streeting could do a deal with Burnham, giving him a senior role if he stayed out of the contest.<\/div>\n<div>While Starmer&#8217;s team believes his \u200blandslide national election win in 2024 gives him the mandate to stay in post until 2029, business minister Peter Kyle said on \u200bSunday the prime minister \u2060was reflecting on &#8220;the political challenges that he faces in this moment&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div>Were Starmer to announce a timetable for his departure from a podium in Downing Street on Monday, he would be just the latest leader to do so.
