LONDON, June 23 (Reuters) – An evacuation plan to enable hundreds of ships with \u200bsome 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Gulf to sail through \u200cthe Strait of Hormuz is underway after Iran and the U.S. reached a ceasefire deal, the United Nations’ shipping agency said on Tuesday.<\/div>\n
“We have \u200bnow started contacting the ships to start the evacuation,” \u200ba spokesperson with the U.N.’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) said, \u2060without providing a timeframe.<\/div>\n
The IMO said it had secured the \u200bnecessary safety guarantees and verified conditions for safe navigation.<\/div>\n
“This large-scale operation \u200bwill be carried out in close cooperation with Iran, Oman, all other coastal states in the region, the United States and the maritime industry,” IMO \u200bSecretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said in a statement.<\/div>\n
The evacuation process under \u200bthe IMO plan, which has been under discussion for months, will be phased, \u200cOman’s \u2060defence ministry said separately in an advisory.<\/div>\n
“Given the elevated risk of collision in the current environment, a gradual and controlled evacuation of vessel traffic is required,” it said.<\/div>\n
The Omani ministry said \u200bthe so-called Traffic \u200bSeparation Scheme was “not \u2060safe for use at this time” and two temporary routes to north and south of the \u200bscheme could be used for evacuation.<\/div>\n
“Vessels will be \u200bcontacted individually \u2060and advised of their allocated transit day by the parties coordinated by IMO,” the ministry advisory said.<\/div>\n
The scheme, adopted by the IMO \u2060in \u200b1968, established routing lanes through Iranian \u200band Omani waters in the strait.<\/div>\n
