WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) – The Republican-majority U.S. Senate backed legislation on Tuesday \u200bto halt U.S. military action against Iran, but \u200cit was not immediately clear how it would affect the war as President Donald Trump’s administration negotiates a peace agreement with the Islamic republic.<\/div>
The \u200bSenate voted 50-48 in favor of the concurrent \u200bresolution, which passed the House of Representatives early this \u2060month, reflecting growing concern even among some of Trump’s \u200bRepublicans about the unpopular conflict that began on February 28.<\/div>
The \u200bvote was nearly along party lines, with four Republicans joining all but one Democrat in favor. Two Republicans did not vote.<\/div>
The \u200bresolution directs Trump to remove U.S. armed forces from \u200bhostilities with or against Iran, but is likely to remain merely \u200ca \u2060symbolic vote.<\/div>
Under the 1973 War Powers Act, the measure does not get sent to the White House for Trump’s signature. However, the White House has insisted the legislation \u200bis not \u200bconstitutional and \u2060thus not binding.<\/div>
Legal experts say it remains a contested legal question likely to be \u200bsettled in the courts.<\/div>
“The executive branch will \u200blikely \u2060ignore it on constitutional grounds, and it\u2019s not clear who might have standing to sue to enforce it,” said Scott \u2060Anderson, \u200ba senior fellow at the Brookings \u200bInstitution and senior editor of the online legal publication Lawfare.<\/div>
