VATICAN CITY, June 23 (Reuters) – The Vatican on Tuesday reaffirmed a long-standing rule that only an ordained priest or \u200bdeacon can give a sermon at a Catholic mass, \u200crejecting a request from German bishops to broaden the practice and allow sermons by women or other laypeople.<\/div>\n
“The current discipline cannot be dispensed \u200bfrom,” said a release from the Vatican’s Dicastery for \u200bDivine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, \u2060which oversees worship by the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.<\/div>\n
Many Catholic \u200bmasses include a sermon, where a priest or a deacon \u200boffers a reflection on the day’s Bible readings. The German bishops’ conference had asked earlier this year for permission for laypeople to also offer \u200bsermons.<\/div>\n
The German request echoed sentiments from many bishops in \u200bthe U.S. and other European countries, who say many laypeople are as \u200ccapable \u2060of preaching as priests. They often cite a desire to hear sermons from women, who cannot be ordained in the Catholic Church.<\/div>\n
The Vatican did not provide its full response to the German \u200bbishops, only \u200ba press release \u2060summarizing its decision.<\/div>\n
“The reservation of the homily to a priest or deacons is not a \u200bmerely disciplinary norm but derives from the very \u200bnature \u2060of the liturgy,” the release said.<\/div>\n
The Catholic Church teaches that during a mass, a priest acts “in persona Christi” (in the person of \u2060Christ), \u200band it is God who acts \u200bthrough the priest during worship.<\/div>\n
Laypeople are allowed to give sermons at prayer services \u200boutside of a mass.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
