PARIS, June 24 (Reuters) – Authorities in northern France were scrambling on Wednesday to restore electricity to thousands of homes hit by power cuts amid a blistering heatwave that has scorched much of western Europe for days.<\/div>\n
Healthcare centres and critical \u200bsites were being prioritised in the effort, with generators provided to tide over retirement homes after \u200cTuesday’s outages blamed on a transformer incident, they added.<\/div>\n
“The incident was accidental and related to the current heat wave,” officials said in a statement. “No one was injured.”<\/div>\n
Record-breaking temperatures across Europe, ranging as high as 18 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal, according to the Reuters \u200bClimate Monitor, have disrupted transport networks and forced schools and tourist sites to shut.<\/div>\n
Weather agency Meteo France \u200bhas said the conditions are comparable to a heatwave in August 2003 that lasted \u206016 days and caused an estimated 80,000 excess deaths across Europe.<\/div>\n
It was not certain how long the current heatwave, \u200bdriven by a weather pattern known as an Omega block, for a shape that allows temperatures to build day \u200bafter day, would last.<\/div>\n
Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, the World Meteorological Organisation has said, which makes prolonged heat episodes increasingly likely.<\/div>\n
The heatwave has forced builders to alter working hours so that employees can avoid the worst, as retailers struggle to meet demand \u200bfor fans and portable air-conditioners and farmers harvest grain at night after a ban on afternoon work due \u200bto fire risks.<\/div>\n
Dozens have drowned as they sought to escape the heat by jumping into bodies of water.<\/div>\n
In Britain, the grid operator asked \u200cgenerators \u2060to make more power available amid soaring temperatures poised to break records later on Wednesday.<\/div>\n
With temperatures in the high thirties, British health authorities have issued a “red heat” health alert, for only the second time ever, warning of a risk to life for even the healthy, as well as the ill and elderly.<\/div>\n
Britain’s train operators have advised only essential \u200bjourneys over the two hottest \u200bdays of Wednesday and \u2060Thursday, as the heat has brought speed restrictions.<\/div>\n
In southeastern France, two children aged two and four who died in a hot car outside their family home were shown on \u200bautopsy to have succumbed to the excessive heat.<\/div>\n
Their mother said the children were in \u200bthe car without \u2060her knowledge, the regional prosecutor said.<\/div>\n
Italy’s health ministry issued its highest heat alert for 16 cities, from Florence and Milan to Rome, Turin and Verona.<\/div>\n
Conditions were expected to worsen further, especially across central and northern regions, with the heatwave likely \u2060to peak \u200bbetween Sunday and Monday, meteorologists said.<\/div>\n
Temperatures could reach 41 degrees C (106 \u200bdegrees F) between Tuscany and Emilia, while in coastal areas such as Liguria the combination of heat and extreme humidity could drive perceived temperatures \u200bas high as 45 degrees C (113 degrees F).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
