But Israeli forces are still deployed deep inside southern Lebanon, \u2060citing the need to shield northern Israel from Hezbollah attack.<\/div><div>Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday that Israel would not withdraw from southern Lebanon, even \u200bif the U.S. demanded it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will remain in Lebanon as long as necessary.<\/div><h2>ISRAELI OFFICIALS SAY TROOPS WOULD BE VETTED<\/h2><div>The \u200bIsraeli officials said the Lebanese troops involved in the U.S.-backed proposal would undergo U.S. training and vetting to ensure they are not linked to Hezbollah, while Israel would maintain a military presence in a buffer zone along the border.<\/div><div>Asked about the Israeli officials&#8217; comments, a senior Lebanese security official said discussions were ongoing in Washington and that specific military-to-military talks, including \u200bon the pilot zones, would take place on Wednesday.<\/div><div>The Lebanese official said the discussions would focus on a timeline for Israeli withdrawal and that any \u200bplan would emerge only after the final day of talks on Thursday. The official did not respond to a request for comment on the Israeli officials&#8217; account of U.S. vetting \u200cof Lebanese \u2060troops.<\/div><div>Lebanese President Joseph Aoun told a British-German delegation that discussions on the proposed &#8220;pilot areas&#8221; were ongoing and awaiting Israeli approval, the Lebanese presidency said.<\/div><div>Lebanon&#8217;s army, which recruits from across the country&#8217;s sectarian mosaic, has long received U.S. military aid, part of U.S. policy to bolster government security institutions in a country where critics say Hezbollah has undermined the state.<\/div><div>Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shi&#8217;ite Muslim group established by Iran&#8217;s Revolutionary Guards in 1982, has consistently demanded the Lebanese government withdraw from the \u200bU.S.-backed talks with Israel \u2014 Beirut&#8217;s highest-level contacts \u200bwith Israel in decades.<\/div><h2>&#8216;DE-CONFLICTION CELL&#8217;<\/h2><div>Tehran required \u2060a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of its interim deal with the U.S., which requires both countries and their allies to declare an immediate and permanent end of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and to ensure Lebanon&#8217;s &#8220;territorial integrity and \u200bsovereignty.&#8221;<\/div><div>The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said on Tuesday that Lebanon was &#8220;an unquestionable part of the \u200bagreement&#8221; and that it \u2060included the withdrawal of Israeli troops.<\/div><div>A joint statement issued at the end of U.S.-Iranian talks in Switzerland on Monday said the parties had agreed to create a &#8220;de-confliction cell&#8221; to ensure adherence to the termination of hostilities in Lebanon.<\/div><div>On Tuesday, the U.S. said it was committed to forming the cell to consolidate the ceasefire in Lebanon, and \u2060that details on \u200bhow it would operate were still under review.<\/div><div>A U.S. proposal for Lebanese army-controlled &#8220;pilot zones&#8221; featured \u200bin a ceasefire plan agreed by Lebanese and Israeli officials on June 3.
