SAO PAULO, June 24 (Reuters) – Brazilian Senator Jaques Wagner, a close ally of \u200bPresident Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, stepped down \u200cas the government’s leader in the Senate on Wednesday, becoming another high-profile casualty of a widening corruption investigation and posing \u200bnew risks for Lula ahead of October’s election.<\/div>\n
Brazilian \u200bauthorities announced last week that Wagner was under \u2060investigation as part of the probe into allegations \u200bthat Daniel Vorcaro, owner of the now defunct Banco \u200bMaster, used his money and influence to cultivate support among prominent politicians.<\/div>\n
“I just had a great meeting with President Lula – \u200ba conversation among friends – and we decided, by \u200bmutual agreement, that I will step down from my leadership role \u200cin \u2060the Federal Senate,” Wagner said in a post on X.<\/div>\n
He added that his priority was to prove his innocence and dedicate himself to the Lula’s \u200bpresidential reelection and \u200bhis own \u2060to the senate.<\/div>\n
Wagner is the first member of Lula’s inner circle to be \u200bensnared by the Master investigation, which has touched \u200bfigures across \u2060Brazil’s political spectrum and is now creating a fresh political headache for the president as he seeks \u2060to defend \u200bhis coalition during his bid \u200bfor a fourth term in office.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
