June 26 (Reuters) – SpaceX (SPCX.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> will be added to the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index on July 7, exchange operator Nasdaq confirmed on \u200bFriday, paving the way for a surge in passive investments in \u200cElon Musk’s rocket and AI giant.<\/div>\n
Inclusion in the index typically boosts the stock price, as exchange-traded funds looking to replicate the index’s performance buy shares of the newly \u200bincluded firm.<\/div>\n
To make it more attractive for companies seeking U.S. listings, Nasdaq, \u200balong with other index providers FTSE Russell (LSEG.L)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> and MSCI (MSCI.N)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>, relaxed \u2060its entry requirements including profitability, the number of days after a company \u200bgoes public and the number of shares available for trading.<\/div>\n
SpaceX, which made its \u200bNasdaq debut on June 12, has swung between sharp losses and small profits over the past three years. Last year, the company reported a net loss of $4.9 billion.<\/div>\n
Large Language \u200bModel (LLM) makers OpenAI and Anthropic are also expected to file for their \u200binitial public offerings this year or next year and likely target valuations of more \u200cthan $1 trillion.<\/div>\n
Investors \u2060buy mutual funds and ETFs, such as Invesco’s QQQ (QQQ.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> and QQQM (QQQM.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>, that track the Nasdaq 100, to get broader exposure.<\/div>\n
J.P. Morgan estimated that SpaceX’s inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 could draw $4.3 billion in passive inflows.<\/div>\n
“Clearly, there’s a \u200blot of demand, \u200bthat’s why they \u2060fast-tracked the integration into the index,” Michael Field, chief equity market strategist at Morningstar, said. “A lot of people will \u200bbe happy with it. Some fund managers less so, the \u200bskeptics \u2060amongst them, us included. We think the stock is overvalued.”<\/div>\n
S&P Global (SPGI.N)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> said this month that it was not changing the requirements for SpaceX to enter its \u2060major indices, \u200bincluding Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index (.SPX)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>, (.INX)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span>, \u200band will wait for at least 12 months before even considering it.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
