BELGRADE, June 27 (Reuters) – Serbia’s populist president Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday he will \u200bresign within weeks and announced early presidential \u200cand parliamentary elections.<\/div>\n
Vucic’s announcement came after a year-and-a-half of anti-corruption protests, led by students, that swept across the \u200bcountry, following the collapse of an awning \u200bat a railway station in the northern city \u2060of Novi Sad in which 16 people \u200bdied.<\/div>\n
Days ago in the city of Novi Sad, students \u200bmarked the 2024 deaths and demanded snap general elections.<\/div>\n
“I will be president for only a couple of weeks, and \u200bthen I will resign,” Vucic told his supporters \u200bat a pro-government rally in the capital, Belgrade. Vucic’s second \u200cand \u2060last mandate expires in mid-2027.<\/div>\n
Vucic also said he would help his Serbian Progressive Party win elections, including the early parliamentary vote, originally set for \u200b2027. He did \u200bnot specify \u2060when he would resign nor when he could dissolve parliament, a precondition \u200bfor early parliamentary elections.<\/div>\n
Protesters, opposition and rights \u200bgroups \u2060allege the railway station disaster was a sign of broader government mismanagement of construction projects and \u2060corruption.Activists from \u200bthe student-led movement say they \u200bwant to challenge Vucic and SNS in upcoming parliamentary and \u200bpresidential elections.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
