June 28 (Reuters) – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has blamed the country’s early World Cupexit on favouritism in personnel appointments and blasted coach Hong Myung-bo, \u200bwhile demanding a sports ministry-led investigation into the national team’s performance.<\/div>\n
“I \u200cam not just taken aback by this unexpected outcome, I am utterly baffled,” Lee posted on X on Sunday, reacting to the team’s elimination despite being widely \u200bexpected to advance from a relatively easy group.<\/div>\n
“Once again, it has \u200bbeen proven that personnel decisions are everything. When ‘us versus them’ \u2060is prioritised over competence, and an incompetent person is selected as a \u200bleader, the outcome is as clear as day.”<\/div>\n
Successive losses to Mexico and South Africaleft \u200bSouth Korea third in Group A, outside the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32.<\/div>\n
Hong’s re-appointment as national team manager in 2024 had already led to \u200ballegations of favouritism and an opaque hiring process from Korean media, all \u200bof which Hong denied.<\/div>\n
“The reason such botched appointments \u2014 which fail to distinguish between public \u200cand \u2060private interests and prioritise personal gain over the public good \u2014 are possible is that it is impossible or difficult to monitor, check, and hold those with appointment authority accountable,” Lee wrote.<\/div>\n
A petition to dismiss Hong posted on \u200bthe website of \u200bthe national assembly \u2060on Thursday quickly gained the signatures it required for an initial review, while social media posts showing shops \u200bwith signs banning Hong from the premises have gone \u200bviral in \u2060South Korea.<\/div>\n
“The failure to qualify… which has left the public feeling disheartened, appears to be the result of organisational and personnel failures,” Lee said.<\/div>\n
“I ask \u2060that the \u200bMinistry of Culture, Sports and Tourism thoroughly \u200binvestigate the exact circumstances of this incident, analyze its causes, and develop measures to prevent \u200brecurrence and ensure improvement.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
