WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) – Migrants in the United States on temporary protected status should seek \u200bpermanent residence or leave for their home countries, U.S. Homeland \u200cSecurity Secretary Markwayne Mullin said on Sunday.<\/div>\n
The remarks to CNN’s “State of the Union” program follow last week’s split Supreme Court decision allowing President Donald Trump’s administration to \u200bstrip hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants of \u200ba humanitarian status that protects them from deportation to \u2060home countries plagued by conflict and destitution.<\/div>\n
“Either try to fill out \u200bthe paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status or we’ll \u200bhelp you get back to your country,” Mullin said.<\/div>\n
“We’ll actually give you a plane ticket, plus roughly $2,100 to help you re-establish when you get there, but \u200btemporary protective status, according to the courts and in its \u200bname itself, is not permanent status,” he added.<\/div>\n
Federal law allows the administration to grant \u200ctemporary \u2060legal residency in the United States to people fleeing war, disaster or other conditions.<\/div>\n
The status had previously been renewed successively and, despite the move to end these protections, the State Department currently warns \u200bagainst traveling to \u200beither Haiti \u2060or Syria, citing widespread violence, crime, terrorism and kidnapping.<\/div>\n
The United States first provided TPS to Haitians after \u200ba devastating earthquake in 2010, and to Syrians after \u200btheir \u2060country descended into civil war in 2012.<\/div>\n
During the 2024 election, Trump falsely accused Haitians living in Ohio of eating others’ household pets. The \u2060Supreme Court’s \u200bconservative majority found, however, that Haitians \u200bsuing the administration were unlikely to succeed in their argument that the administration’s actions \u200bwere racially biased.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
