June 29 (Reuters) – Comcast (CMCSA.O)<\/svg>, opens new tab<\/span> will split into two publicly traded companies through a spinoff of NBCUniversal and Sky, separating its cash-generating \u200bbroadband arm from a media and entertainment business under \u200cpressure from streaming rivals and industry consolidation.<\/div>\n
Shares of the company rose more than 20% in premarket trading on Monday.<\/div>\n
The latest U.S. media industry shake-up follows \u200byears of cord-cutting as legacy players chase scale to \u200bbetter compete with Netflix while Paramount Skydance’s $110 billion deal for \u2060Warner Bros Discovery is set to boost competition.<\/div>\n
Comcast, which leans \u200bon cable for much of its cash flow, is also losing \u200bbroadband customers to fixed wireless offerings from T-Mobile and Verizon and to fiber rivals building out networks.<\/div>\n
“The transaction we are announcing will unlock a more \u200bentrepreneurial management approach and open up a multitude of new opportunities \u200bfor each business,” Brian Roberts, chairman and co-CEO of Comcast, said.<\/div>\n
The split, expected \u200cto \u2060be completed in about a year, will create one company anchored by Comcast’s cable, wireless and business services arm and another built around Universal theme parks, film and TV studios, NBC, Peacock \u200band the European \u200bmedia business Sky.<\/div>\n
Mike \u2060Cavanagh, Comcast’s co-CEO, will run the new NBCUniversal. Michael Angelakis, former chief financial officer, will return \u200bto lead Comcast as CEO, after initially joining as \u200ba \u2060strategic adviser ahead of the separation.<\/div>\n
Comcast shareholders will own stock in both companies after the deal closes.<\/div>\n
The company will keep a stake of \u2060as \u200bmuch as 19.9% in NBCUniversal for up \u200bto a year following the spinoff, which it plans to monetize over time.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
