BERLIN, June 30 (Reuters) – Germany is demanding a \u20ac400 billion ($456 billion) cut to the European \u200bCommission’s proposed budget of \u20ac2 trillion for \u200c2028-2034, warning that the current plans are “unaffordable,” according to an internal government document seen by Reuters \u200bon Tuesday.<\/div>\n
Because the EU budget, called \u200bMultiannual Financial Framework, requires unanimity among all \u206027 member states, Germany’s sharp opposition \u200bsignals a tough battle ahead, with Berlin warning \u200bin the document that “as it stands, an agreement is impossible.”<\/div>\n
As the EU’s largest net contributor, Germany is \u200balarmed by the proposed scale of \u200bthe next seven-year budget, which is a significant increase \u200cfrom \u2060the \u20ac1.3 trillion budget for 2021-2027.<\/div>\n
Berlin argues that even with its proposed \u20ac400 billion trim, the budget would still be 27% larger than \u200bthe current one, \u200bpushing \u2060Germany’s annual contribution to over \u20ac50 billion.<\/div>\n
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged member \u200bstates to seal a deal this \u200byear \u2060to ensure planning certainty before the budget takes effect in January 2028, especially with \u2060major elections \u200blooming in France, Poland \u200band Italy in 2027.<\/div>\n
