{"id":3426,"date":"2026-07-01T10:10:31","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T10:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=3426"},"modified":"2026-07-01T10:10:31","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T10:10:31","slug":"us-doj-directs-prosecutors-to-prioritize-birth-tourism-probes-following-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reliablemovingcrews.com\/?p=3426","title":{"rendered":"US DOJ directs prosecutors to prioritize &#8216;birth tourism&#8217; probes following court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Summary<\/li>\n<li>Companies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) &#8211; The U.S. Justice Department on Tuesday directed federal prosecutors to prioritize investigations of so-called birth tourism schemes after the Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump&#8217;s attempt to restrict birthright citizenship in the United States.<\/div>\n<div>A senior \u200bJustice Department official, Colin McDonald, told employees in a memo that people who \u200bcome to the United States under &#8220;false pretenses&#8221; to give birth and secure \u2060citizenship for their child could be criminally charged under laws barring visa fraud, money \u200blaundering, identity theft and wire fraud.<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;The Department of Justice will zealously protect the sanctity of \u200bUnited States citizenship by investigating and prosecuting those who fraudulently exploit our immigration system,&#8221; McDonald wrote in a memo to all DOJ employees that was posted on social media.<\/div>\n<div>The directive came hours after the Supreme \u200bCourt, in a 6-3 ruling, struck down a Trump executive order seeking to prevent children \u200bborn in the United States from automatically becoming citizens if neither parent is an American citizen or \u200ca legal \u2060permanent resident. The ruling affirmed the longstanding right to citizenship for nearly all born in the U.S.<\/div>\n<div>The DOJ memo was an indication that the Trump administration intends to keep focus on the issue, part of its hardline approach to immigration, despite the setback at the \u200bhigh court. It \u200bdirects federal prosecutors to \u2060work with the Department of Homeland Security on investigations. DHS in April ordered its investigative agents to focus on a new &#8220;Birth Tourism Initiative.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>Among \u200bthe arguments the Justice Department made in defense of Trump&#8217;s order \u200bis that \u2060birthright citizenship promotes &#8220;birth tourism,&#8221;
