WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he and his fellow Republicans will stage a convention in Dallas in September to rally voters for the \u200bparty’s candidates ahead of November’s midterm congressional elections.<\/div>\n
An off-year convention is unusual, with such events \u200cusually held only during presidential election years.<\/div>\n
Republicans are under pressure to hold on to control of Congress for Trump’s final two years in office and worry that voter unease over the economy and Trump’s decision to go to war with \u200bIran could hurt their efforts.<\/div>\n
“BIG NEWS! For the first time ever, the Republican Party will \u200bhold a MIDTERM CONVENTION. It will be in Dallas, Texas \u2014 One of my \u2060favorite places in the World. It will be fantastic!” Trump said in a social media post.<\/div>\n
Trump plans \u200bto address the gathering, according to two Republican sources familiar with the matter who spoke on condition \u200bof anonymity.<\/div>\n
The move would further tie him to the election’s outcome at a moment when Republicans are confronting historic headwinds.<\/div>\n
The party that holds the White House in the first midterm elections after a presidential election usually loses congressional seats.<\/div>\n
Trump \u200bsaid the event, scheduled for September 9 and 10, would bring together “hardworking Americans, our Great Innovators, Entrepreneurs, \u200bManufacturers, First Responders, and Job Creators who are powering our Nation’s Golden Age.”<\/div>\n
“It will be a RALLY like none \u200cother!” \u2060he said.<\/div>\n
Joe Gruters, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in a statement that the convention will showcase Trump’s “America First” agenda.<\/div>\n
“President Trump will unite Republicans around our shared vision, build momentum, and deliver an incredible convention for our party,” he said.<\/div>\n
Republicans face a crucial test in Texas over whether they can continue to \u200bdominate politics in the \u200bstate. Trump dealt a \u2060stunning blow to longtime incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn by endorsing his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton easily defeated Cornyn in the Republican primary election.<\/div>\n
This \u200bhas set up a November battle between Paxton and Democrat James Talarico. Democrats \u200bsee the scandal-tarred \u2060Paxton as vulnerable and are pouring money into the race in hopes of finally breaking Republicans’ grip on the state.<\/div>\n
Trump wants to use the convention to rally his Make America Great Again faithful to vote in \u2060November, the \u200bsources said. Voter turnout in midterm elections is historically much \u200blower than in presidential elections.<\/div>\n
A Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives or Senate could complicate Trump’s agenda for his remaining \u200btime in office.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
