May 30 (Reuters) – The World Health Organisation chief on Saturday called on communities in the centre of the Congo’s latest Ebola outbreak to \u200bplay a central role in fighting the disease.<\/div>\n
WHO Director-General Tedros \u200cAdhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday to coordinate the response to the Ebola outbreak, for which 1,028 suspected cases had been recorded \u200bby Friday, according to Congolese authorities.<\/div>\n
“The communities understand the \u200bproblems better and they know the solution as well,” WHO \u2060Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters after arriving in Bunia, \u200bthe provincial capital of Ituri, a hotspot of the ongoing Ebola outbreak.<\/div>\n
“Yes, \u200bthe international community is involved, under the leadership of the government of DRC. At the same time, community ownership is important. That’s why we are here \u200bto discuss with the community to see how the response is \u200brunning and, if there are challenges, to help,” Tedros said.<\/div>\n
On arrival in Congo’s \u200ccapital \u2060Kinshasa on Thursday, Tedros called for more international support for the Ebola response, saying the WHO had so far received only a third of its funding requirements.<\/div>\n
French aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) on Saturday \u200bwarned that the \u200blatest Ebola outbreak – \u2060the 17th since 1976 – was spreading at an unprecedented pace.<\/div>\n
“Never before has an Ebola outbreak recorded \u200bso many cases so soon after its declaration,” Alan \u200bGonzalez, MSF \u2060deputy director of operations, said in a statement.<\/div>\n
The number of expert medical organisations responding to the outbreak on the ground, as well as \u2060the \u200blevel of support being provided to fight \u200bthe outbreak, is still far short of what is required, Gonzalez added.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
