May 31 (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with both Lebanese \u200bPresident Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu \u200con the diplomatic negotiations between Israel and Lebanon and has proposed a plan to allow for “gradual de-escalation,” a U.S. official said \u200bon Sunday.<\/div>\n
The U.S. has proposed that as a first \u200bstep, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group would stop \u2060all attacks on Israel and in return Israel would \u200brefrain from escalation in Beirut, the official said.<\/div>\n
“This would create \u200bspace for gradual de-escalation and an effective cessation of hostilities,” according to the official.<\/div>\n
They added that Aoun tried to advance the proposal and \u200bsecure an agreement. However, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, \u200bwho claimed to “guarantee” Hezbollah’s commitment to a ceasefire, placed the burden \u200con \u2060Israel to stop “shooting first.”<\/div>\n
Netanyahu had said on Sunday that he ordered troops to move further into Lebanon in the battle against Hezbollah, despite a ceasefire announced more than six weeks ago.<\/div>\n
In \u200bthe latest advance, \u200bIsraeli troops \u2060seized the 900-year-old Beaufort Castle and a strategic ridge in southern Lebanon, the military said \u200bearlier on Sunday, a day after one \u200bof the \u2060heaviest days of Hezbollah fire toward northern Israel since the April ceasefire, prompting school closures and restrictions.<\/div>\n
The U.S. official \u2060said that \u200bthe U.S. did not expect \u200bIsrael to absorb ongoing attacks on its civilians from Hezbollah.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
