JEURSALEM, June 1 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday ordered the military \u200bto attack targets in the Lebanese capital Beirut’s \u200csouthern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold known as Dahiyeh.<\/div>\n
“Following repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the terrorist group Hezbollah and \u200bthe attacks against our cities and citizens, \u200bPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel \u2060Katz ordered the IDF to attack terrorist targets in \u200bthe Dahiyeh district in Beirut,” a statement from Netanyahu’s \u200boffice said.<\/div>\n
Israeli troops and Hezbollah have continued to trade fire since a mid-April ceasefire, with Hezbollah resorting to the use of cheap, \u200beasy-to-assemble kamikaze drones that are hard for air defences \u200bto thwart and that have killed several Israeli troops in southern \u200cLebanon.<\/div>\n
The \u2060fighting in Lebanon has been the broadest spillover of the Iran war, displacing more than 1.2 million Lebanese through Israeli strikes and evacuation orders since March 2, when \u200bHezbollah began \u200bfiring rockets and \u2060drones into Israel to back its ally Iran.<\/div>\n
The incursion has so far killed \u200bmore than 3,370 people, according to the \u200bLebanese government. \u2060Israel says 24 of its soldiers and four civilians have been killed over the same period. Tens of \u2060thousands \u200bof Israelis in the country’s north \u200bhave also been displaced by Hezbollah rockets and drones.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
