MEXICO CITY, June 1 (Reuters) – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that far-right sectors in the United States are coordinating with \u200bdomestic groups to attack her government, escalating her rhetoric \u200cagainst Mexico’s largest trading partner.<\/div>\n
The remarks follow a weekend rally where Sheinbaum denounced alleged interference by U.S. government agencies and business interests.<\/div>\n
“I believe it is sectors \u200bof the far right in the United States who want \u200ba bad relationship with Mexico” because of “ideological” differences, Sheinbaum told a press \u2060conference.<\/div>\n
The leftist president said she does not believe the attacks \u200bare being orchestrated by her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump.<\/div>\n
Relations between the two \u200bnations have been strained since Trump began his second term in January, fueled by disputes over tariffs and immigration policies.<\/div>\n
Tensions escalated in April after the U.S. \u200bDepartment of Justice indicted 10 Mexican officials, including Sinaloa Governor Ruben \u200bRocha of the ruling Morena party, for alleged ties to drug trafficking.<\/div>\n
Following the U.S. \u200cindictments \u2060of Morena politicians, Sheinbaum has intensified her calls to protect national sovereignty.<\/div>\n
“Who decides in Mexico, foreign agencies or the people?” Sheinbaum told supporters on Sunday, at an event to commemorate the second anniversary of her 2024 \u200bpresidential victory. “We are \u200bgoing to defend \u2060Mexico’s sovereignty and independence.”<\/div>\n
Last week, Mexico’s congress approved a constitutional amendment allowing for the annulment of elections \u200bin the event of “foreign interference.” Opposition leaders have \u200bcriticized the \u2060legislation as a pretext to hold new elections if the results are unfavorable to the ruling party.<\/div>\n
Despite the diplomatic friction, Sheinbaum’s domestic standing remains strong. A \u2060poll \u200bpublished by newspaper El Financiero showed her \u200bapproval rating at 69%, reversing a slight decline that began in March.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
